Chase “shochi” Capello talks about his new team, Dorado Gaming, and how he feels they compare to the esteemed NACL teams like Supernova, Luminosity, and DarkZero Dragon Steel. He has thoughts about the format, and still has confidence in his team in spite of what the regular season results show.
Q: As one of the “new kids on the block” in Dorado after successfully promoting in the NACL Open Qualifiers, did you have high expectations for your team?
A: We didn’t face many struggles at all in promoting to tier 2, but having played in tier2 for a while beforehand, I knew the level of competition would be much greater. Still, I believed in our ability to make top 3 minimum with this roster.
Q: You have the most experience in the NACL on your team. Do you feel like your teammates look to you for guidance on handling the pressures of competition?
A: I feel like I could be doing more to fulfill my role as a veteran, such as by shot calling more or being a better leader out of game, but it’s my first split where I have to be the veteran of the team. They are all doing great, especially the rookies like Sushee and Mixtsure, when you consider their level of experience. I think we all can improve on their own pretty comfortably, but I wish I was so unbelievably good that they would want to seek out my guidance more.
Q: You finished in 6th place out of 8 teams. Obviously, everyone wants to win, but how do you feel about your team’s results?
A: Best of 1 regular season is a joke. We will get top 3 minimum. I think we have a very real chance of playing in the promotion tournament to tier 1.
Q: Which opposing mid laner were you worried about facing the most? Do you think you learned a lot when facing them?
A: The only lane opponent I actively prepare for is insanity. There are definitely talented players like Toasty and KatEvolved, but Insanity is the only one where I wouldn’t say I’m better 100/100 times. But I need to have an ego to improve so take that as you will.
Q: Where do you see yourself in five years? Would you still be playing League of Legends? Would you be tier 1? What team would you sign with?
A: I can’t think that far ahead. All I know is I will get rank1 before I die. Hopefully a team realizes I can bring them an international trophy as well, that would be pretty neat.
Q: What is something you do to help prepare for your matches? For example, Massu smells oranges because the scent calms him.
A: During my first year pursuing pro. I used to get nervous during my matches, but now as long as I feel confident in my preparation (scouting, drafting, level1 plan, champion mastery etc.) There’s nothing that can shake me on stage. The hard part comes from everything leading up to the match, not the match itself. I love competing.
Q: Do you have a weird, secret talent? If yes, what is it, and how did you discover you could do it?
A: I can make a water droplet sound with my mouth because I got a YouTube recommended video in high school.
